Understanding How Trauma Affects the Brain and Behavior

Hypervigilance
Sleep disturbance
Intrusive memories
Emotional numbing
Irritability or anger
Avoidance behaviors

"Stabilization

One of the most common mistakes in trauma treatment is moving too quickly into memory processing before emotional regulation skills are established.
At Valiant Recovery, trauma therapy begins with stabilization, which may include:
Grounding techniques
Nervous system regulation strategies
Distress tolerance training
Emotional awareness development
Establishing safety within the therapeutic relationship
Only after stability is achieved does deeper trauma processing begin, when clinically appropriate.
Because our inpatient program is limited to 20 clients at a time, clinicians are able to monitor emotional responses closely and pace treatment accordingly.

"Integrated

Family counseling may be incorporated throughout:
Residential Inpatient Program
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Aftercare & Post-Treatment Support

"Integrating

Trauma therapy does not occur in isolation from addiction treatment. It is integrated into the broader recovery plan.
Clients simultaneously work on:
Relapse trigger identification
Emotional regulation
Boundary setting
Communication skills
Stress tolerance
This ensures that trauma-related stress does not become an unaddressed vulnerability after discharge.

"Reclaiming

Long-term recovery from trauma and addiction requires rebuilding confidence in one’s ability to tolerate emotional discomfort without returning to substances.
Treatment emphasizes:
Recognizing trauma triggers early
Regulating physiological stress responses
Differentiating past threat from present safety
Strengthening healthy coping mechanisms
Building supportive relationships
Over time, individuals develop greater emotional flexibility and reduced reliance on self-medication.
