Dual diagnosis refers to the presence of both:

A co-occurring mental or behavioral health condition

Common co-occurring conditions include anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, trauma-related conditions, and persistent emotional regulation difficulties.

Substances often function as short-term coping tools. They may reduce anxiety temporarily, numb emotional pain, or provide relief from intrusive thoughts. Over time, however, the substance creates its own cycle of dependence, making both conditions more severe.
